BURGUNDY

Burgundy, located in the east of France, is a complex and fascinating region, revered for its Pinot Noir reds and Chardonnay whites. Unlike Bordeaux, the focus here is on the *terroir* and the individual vineyard plots, known as *climats*, many of which are classified as Premier Cru or Grand Cru. Burgundy wines are known for their elegance, complexity and ability to subtly reflect the nuances of their place of origin.

The region stretches from Chablis in the north, famous for its mineral and unoaked Chardonnays, to Beaujolais in the south (often considered separate but historically linked), known for its fruity Gamay reds. The heart of Burgundy is the Côte d'Or, divided into the Côte de Nuits (predominantly Pinot Noir from vineyards such as Gevrey-Chambertin and Vosne-Romanée) and the Côte de Beaune (famous for great Chardonnays such as Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, as well as excellent Pinot Noirs). Further south, the Côte Chalonnaise and the Mâconnais offer excellent value wines, both red and white.
